At the corner of a chic district in the Former French Concession, Puxi, Shanghai, lies a former Russian Orthodox church that is now an art gallery by Espace Shanghai. It currently houses China's contemporary artist and curator, Shi Shaoping's latest solo exhibition.

The Metamorphosis Series | Single Cut - Shi Shaoping

Titled The Metamorphosis Series | Single Cut, the exhibition is part of the artist’s Metamorphosis Series of ceramics works. Born in Jiangxi Province, the artist graduated from Shanghai Theater Academy and now lives and works in the city. The painter-turned-ceramicist is best known for his ‘egg’ sculptures which was recently exhibited as an outdoor installation at the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, whom Artitute had the pleasure of meeting in person last year. The 3000 pieces of milky white smooth sculptures dominated the outdoor hall.

The disruptive Single Cut was created after The Eggs series, both set of works are made of solid ceramics. A set of wall texts at the exhibition hall explained the arduous process that the artist went through for almost a year of tests and experiments, with different firing techniques, types of clay, and with the help of ceramic experts in Jing De Zhen to create the perfect artwork.

The Metamorphosis Series | Single Cut by Espace, will be at 55 Xinle Lu, Shanghai, till the 31st March 2013. Daily from 11am to 8pm. Admission is free.
