Christie’s Presents Highlights from Hong Kong Spring Auctions Singapore Preview 2013

Christie’s will hold its 2013 Hong Kong Spring Auctions from 25-29 May at the Convention Hall in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The series will feature sales across a variety of collecting categories — from Chinese paintings, Chinese ceramics and works of art, Asian 20th century and contemporary art, to fine wine, jewellery and watches.

Christie’s presented the preview in Singapore on 4 & 5 May 2013.

Besides the selection of sought-after jewels and time pieces, Christie’s also presented the largest range of Southeast Asian art on auction to date. These included works by Singaporean and Malaysian artists which integrate the artistic traditions of both the East and the West, presenting critically acclaimed innovations of traditional subjects through modern lenses.

The private sales exhibition of Chinese contemporary ink paintings will also travel to Singapore. This follows a non-selling exhibition in Hong Kong last year and private sales exhibition in New York Asian Art Week in March, which contributed significantly to Christie’s presence in the market.

I skipped the Jewellery & Watches preview at Grand Corporate Suite, Grand Hyatt Singapore; and went to Level 4 Galleries, ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sand for the “Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art” and “Beyond Tradition: Chinese Contemporary Ink – Chinese Classical and Modern Paintings, and Calligraphy” on 5 May 2013.

It was lovely to be able to view “The Gerardo Rueda Collection of Fernando Zobel Artworks”. I remember visiting the museum dedicated to him in Manila a few years ago. He is part of the prominent Ayala-Zóbel family. My personal favourite in this collection is “Arganda”, Lot3375.

It is always interesting but tinged with a bit of sadness –- happy to view such lovely arrays of art but sad because after they are sold, they will be in private collections, away from public eyes till they surface on the market again. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable to attend a Christie’s event.
