Thirteen art galleries, featuring some of the best contemporary art of our time, recently opens their doors to visitors from 15 September 2012 at Gillman Barracks, the new contemporary art destination in Asia. Sundaram Tagore Gallery is one of them.

Established in 2000 in New York City, Sundaram Tagore Gallery is devoted to examining the exchange of ideas between Western and non- Western cultures. Its interest in cross-cultural exchange extends beyond the visual arts into many other disciplines, including poetry, literature, performance art, film and music.

The gallery opens with a photography exhibition titled “The Big Picture”, which includes the work of world renowned photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe and Sebastião Salgado, all of whom have shown us alternate way to look at the world and fundamentally changed the way we see the world.

Of late, photography has acquired a great deal of importance in the contemporary art world with more and more leading arts institutions in the West devoting resources and space to it. Sundaram Tagore will continue this trend at Gillman Barracks. Much of the work in The Big Picture has never before been shown in Singapore.

Sundaram Tagore Gallery also focuses on developing exhibitions and hosting not- for-profit events that encourage spiritual, social and aesthetic dialogues. In a world where communication is instant and cultures are colliding and melding as never before, the gallery aims to provide venues for art that transcends boundaries of all sorts.

Its eponymous gallery director and founder is an Indian-born, New York-based art historian, gallerist and filmmaker. The gallery has branches in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

I look upon the opening of Gillman Barracks and having Gallerist such as Mr Tagore taking interest in Singapore, as an Artful Flourish. I love the ethos of Mr Tagore for his focus on East meet West. This is extremely important due to Globalisation.
