I just want to clarify that the comments I have made earlier are meant to be constructive and not to hurt Mr Wee. What I mean to say is that compared to artists like Xu Beihong and Liu Haisu who had also been trained in France, I do not see signs of mastery like theirs in Mr Wee works that were exhibited. My apologies, if I have caused any unhappiness on his part or anyone.

Having read in the papers about the exhibition, I made a bee-line to your campus. Without any due disrpect for Mr Wee, I must say that I was quite disappointed. For one, there was no explanation in English nor Chinese on the calligraphy which were supposed to form a crucial part of the paintings. Chinese artists trained in France like Xu Beihong and Liu Haisu chose to switch back to paint in Chinese ink towards the end of their artistic career and had successfully created a superior style of his own. Unfortunately, there is no such evidence in Mr Wee's works as both the brushstrokes and calligraphy appeared to be half-hearted attempts at mastery.

I don't see how this is effective in "empowering individuals to embrace their femininity". Photographs of transgenders dolled up, sexualized and posed alongside toys is not what i think of when i think about empowerment. It gets worse with the title of the show. I'll explain myself. It encourages the ideal of what a woman should look like, and maintains the notion of women as an object of men, for their viewing pleasure. Like suzz herself points out, she "felt an inferiority complex just by looking at their perfect bodies and beautiful features". As for the women being transgender.. to meet the perfect 'ideal' look of a woman for men - to be the perfect boy's toy - is that really empowerment? Is the objectification of these women what the transgender community needs at the moment? If the 'boys' in the title referred to these women, i think it is wrong to maintain that considering that it is very clear from the photographs that they identify as women. This exhibition is very unexamined, and is a piss in the face of the feminist and the transgender community.

I guess it is a compromise of sorts since Sentosa closed down the Artists Village. Amara Hotel is pretty soulless as it is, despite the fact that it's a spa hotel so the artists will help to mask that.
