This December, join artist Sarkasi Said in a two-part Batik masterclass at the NUS Museum as part of the exhibition ‘Always Moving: The Batik Art of Sarkasi Said’. Participants will learn about the basic techniques of Batik and begin to explore other approaches in the resist technique used by Sarkasi Said in the creation of his works.

1st Part: Introduction to Resist Technique in Batik
9 December, 2pm – 5pm
Participants will be introduced to the basic theories, materials, techniques and patterns of the resist technique in Batik, followed by a hands-on session.

2nd Part: Beyond Wax – Diverse approaches in Resist Technique in Batik
16 December, 2pm – 5pm
For the second part of the Masterclass, participants are encouraged to bring an item that can be used as a medium of ‘resistance’ to be incorporated into the lesson as Sarkasi Said proceeds to share about the alternative approaches in resist technique to create various patterns and textures. Materials that we will be exploring include clay, wax paper, sand and sodium silicate. Look forward to creating your own experimental Batik piece!
