The gods must be smiling on Mr Gong Yao Min when he was announced the winner of The UOB Painting of the Year 2011 award. The first time Mr Gong won the coveted award was nine years ago for the UOB Painting of the Year 2002 award. He took home the $30.000 grand prize.

Close up of “My Dream Land” by Mr Gong Yao Min

A Chinese painting art lecturer, Mr Gong worked diligently on this masterpiece which took him 2 years to complete. The time and effort he took on the very fine and detailed Chinese painting styled artwork of his version of Singapore’s landscape definitely paid off. Titled “My Dream Land”, the Chinese ink on rice paper artwork is a massive 180cm x 180cm in size. As we stood in front of the painting, we were dwarfed by its massive and impressive display. This man has great skills and technique.

You can catch the exhibition of this year’s winners at the Jendela Gallery at the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay. But, you have two more days to catch up with a major Singapore art event. So get your butt down to the prickly durian and support our local talents.
