I immediately thought that this would be a fun and engaging project that would complement the Affordable Art Fair and submitted it into their Special Projects program. I felt that this unique robot could help to demystify the world of mechanics by interacting with artworks that were both vibrant and approachable. The obvious choice was to pair the artwork of the American pop artist Burton Morris and invite the DoodleBot to emulate his artwork.

I hope that this piece opens up discussion and dialogue about what it means to be an artist, especially so today when multiple new media are now available for artists to use. I would also like people to question art itself, are we “programmed” to appreciate art or is this something that comes naturally? If this is the case then surely art is for everyone, even robots!

So how does the DoodleBot work?
Users can log onto to the DoodleBot’s private local Wifi and select one of the programmed designs. The DoodleBot picks up the stylus and creates its masterpiece.

Bored of the sketch or want to see a new one?
The DoodleBot will simply wipe the slate clean and draw a new masterpiece.
