    NDP Singapore 2012

I’ve always been a big fan of “live” performance art, be it a dance recital, a theatre production, a concert or even a parade and have always felt that sadly, parades never get the respect that they deserve. One of the reasons may be that they cater to the masses which I think, just in itself, is no easy task! Therefore, I found myself very fortunate to attend the preview of this year’s National Day Parade at the Floating Pavilion, for an exclusive peek into this year’s festivities.

When author Joan Didion lost her husband to a sudden heart attack on December 30, 2003, she turned to writing to alleviate her pain and grief. Her remarkable book, The Year of Magical Thinking, was borne from that cathartic exercise. The plays were staged at Play Den at The Arts House on 4 – 5 August.

In the course of a circular walk-through display representing time, American artist Hilton McConnico, scenographer, poet and long-time partner of Hermès, tells the story of Hermès time through poetic displays tinged with light humour, a cornucopia of colours and a series of sensory discoveries.

"Hermès time does not try to master time but rather offers us the time to see and understand this ever changing world", says Hilton McConnico.

It is with bated breath as I enter the exhibition space to begin my journey through time. Our group is ushered into the low-lit first chamber, in the hush, we begin by contemplating the Origin of Time: A sundial sits on the wall between (more…)
